The TRAK Trunnion: A new trunnion option brings full 5-axis capability to TRAK’s high-performance machining centers—delivering exceptional precision, rigidity, and productivity.

TRAK Machine Tools has introduced a precision trunnion assembly that gives the VMC12si and VMC14si full 5-axis machining capability. Designed and built entirely in-house by SWI Manufactured Systems, a Southwestern Industries company, the TRAK Trunnion enables both 3+2 and simultaneous 5-axis machining, expanding what these proven SINUMERIK ONE machining centers can do while maintaining the precision, performance, and operator confidence that define the TRAK si-series.

Built for Performance

The trunnion assembly’s compact, low-profile design—just eight inches from the mill table to the platter—sets it apart from comparable systems that often stand 12 inches or taller. This lower profile provides greater Z-axis travel and a larger usable machining envelope, while maintaining rigidity and precision across demanding operations.

Inside the housing is a robust tilt mechanism offering an impressive ±130° of motion, allowing superior tool reach and part access. Combined with 25% more torque than comparable units and cycloidal-type reducers that outperform conventional worm drives, the TRAK Trunnion delivers the power and smooth motion control that advanced applications demand.

Trunnion Details

  • 3+2 and 5th-axis Trunnion
  • More tilt than competitors: +/- 130 degrees
  • 25% more torque than competitors
  • Lower profile than competitors
  • Cycloidal type reducers outperforms worm drives
  • Maintenance-free and lifetime lubrication
  • Optional equipment for the TRAK VMC12si and VMC14si Vertical Machining Centers featuring the Siemens SINUMERIK ONE

Maintenance-Free, Built to Last

Engineered for long-term reliability, the system produces over 350 ft-lbs of continuous torque and up to 1,000 ft-lbs peak, supporting aggressive cutting conditions with ease. The fully sealed assembly is lubricated for life, offering a maintenance-free solution that keeps production running with minimal downtime.

At its core is a cycloidal drive system—the same proven motion technology used for years in other TRAK assemblies. This precision “rolling” reducer virtually eliminates backlash and wear, ensuring stable, repeatable performance over the long life of the machine.

Precision Engineering, Seamless Integration

The TRAK Trunnion integrates directly with the VMC12si and VMC14si, delivering smooth, simultaneous 5-axis motion under SINUMERIK ONE control. Machinists gain greater part accessibility, fewer setups, and the ability to produce complex geometries efficiently—all while achieving the level of control and responsiveness expected from TRAK’s advanced vertical machining centers.

The TRAK Trunnion was designed and built by SWI Manufactured Systems, a Southwestern Industries company specializing in high-precision electromechanical assemblies.
